Import Wizard for Importing Existing Building Surveying Data

This is a brief explanation of the PocketSurvey Import Wizard, which allows you to easily import existing data from your legacy housing and asset management systems into the powerful PocketSurvey database and reporting system.

What does it do?

Provides an easy and intuitive way to import existing data from any system into PS Survey Manager's tables.

How does it do it?

By mapping fields from a source table into fields in the PS Data Manager database then copying the source data into the destination table.

Here's an example:

Map existing building data

The client has provided a source file that combines property information and multiple items within that property into individual records (it's not normalized, but the Import wizard can handle that). Multiple fields can be concatenated into one - in this case the Address and Postcode fields are to be combined into the Building ID to provide a unique ID. The Address will be appended with a suffix (a comma in this case) to improve readability.

Source fields can also be mapped to more than one destination field. You can see that the Address and Postcode fields are also mapped to separate fields in the destination record.

Once the fields are mapped (and this only needs to be done once - since the mapping can be remembered for repeated imports) you simply select an action, in this case Import new records then click the Do It button.

Imported building data

All the Property details now appear in PS Data Manager's top panel. Now for the Element items:

Map existing building elements data

Here the Destination is set to the Element Table and, apart from the Address and Postcode fields, which provide the unique Building ID, only the fields relating to item information are mapped. Import new records will now populate PS Data Manager's bottom panel.
